Growth Strategy Account-Based Marketing Retention B2B Branded Workwear

# The brief was to grow web sales. The answer was already in the customer list.

Engagement

Fractional CMO

Essential Workwear is a family-owned branded workwear supplier based in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, founded by George Georgiou in 1998. Over nearly three decades, the business has built a major production capability — outputting over 11,000 branded garments per day across embroidery, DTF printing, and screen printing — alongside a 4.9-star Trustpilot rating, ISO certifications, and a loyal customer base spanning construction, healthcare, and the trades. The quality was never in question.

When Louis Georgiou stepped into operational leadership, he arrived with clear ambitions to scale. The website was the front door, and the initial plan was to drive more traffic through it. Matthew Gaunt was brought in to conduct a strategic review and help map out that digital expansion.

What followed was a strategic reframe that changed how the business looked at growth.

The Challenge

## A strong business built the hard way — with an opportunity hiding in the data.

Essential Workwear has built a strong business the hard way, from the ground up — on product quality, fast turnaround, and word of mouth. But looking closely at the data, the analytics revealed another opportunity.

The business has a large number of active accounts. Typical for standard web sales, only around a third placed a second order, meaning the existing infrastructure had been built for ecommerce — front end acquisition; attracting new visitors, converting them, and moving on.

However, Essential Workwear's core commercial engine is account-based, not just transactional. The customers who stayed and grew were worth multiples of a one-time buyer. A small cohort of Diamond accounts generated a disproportionate share of revenue — each spending significantly more each year. The strategy needed to change to find, keep, and scale these deep relationships, balancing volume with lifetime value.

The business was working hard, but not in the direction or speed that would get it to where Louis wanted to go.

The Solution

## Questioning the brief before executing it.

Matthew Gaunt, Fractional CMO, began the engagement not by executing the brief — but by questioning it. Before any marketing activity was planned or budget committed, he initiated a structured discovery process to look beneath the surface of the marketing and align it with the business's deepest commercial opportunities. That discovery helped clarify a new strategic roadmap.

01

### Reframing the business: from ecommerce to account-based

The diagnosis became clear within weeks. Essential Workwear's commercial strength rewarded depth of relationship. Therefore, the most capital-efficient route to accelerated growth wasn't just chasing raw click volume — it was focusing heavily on retention, turning one-time web buyers into repeat accounts and expanding the high-value base. While digital acquisition remains a vital pillar, the existing customer list held immediate, high-margin value with a faster payback period. This was a fundamental reframe — and not just of the marketing plan.

02

### A three-lever growth model

A structured five-year growth model was outlined, anchored to three revenue levers: acquiring new accounts at the right cost; improving retention from existing accounts; and growing share of wallet through broader product coverage. The model set out a clear path toward a 5x growth target over five years — not as a single bet on one marketing channel, but as a compound effect of all three levers working in sequence, prioritised by speed to return.

03

### Shifting focus to account-based marketing

With the strategic framework established, the business began aligning its marketing focus accordingly. Frameworks were developed to nurture and re-engage the existing customer base, moving the approach toward targeted, relationship-led account development. The web presence and digital activity were reframed within this new model — positioning the digital storefront not just as a standalone conversion engine, but as a powerful lead-generation and credibility channel that supports the entire B2B buying journey.

The Results

## The strategic pivot from ecommerce acquisition to account-based marketing has started to produce early commercial results quickly — because the opportunity was already there.

### A strategic blueprint to avoid wasted spend

The structured discovery process identified early on that a standalone investment into generic ecommerce traffic would not have delivered the long-term equity Louis was looking for. Redirecting that focus before heavy capital was committed provided a model that fits the business's B2B strengths much better.

### Outlining an account-based framework

The groundwork laid for outbound marketing and account management created a clear path to reactivate accounts, increase repeat order rates, and build a dedicated pipeline from the existing customer base.

### A five-year growth model the business can execute against

A clear, costed model sets out how Essential Workwear can grow the business sustainably through three sequenced levers. The leadership team has a structured framework they can act on as they take the business forward into its next phase of growth.

> “The discovery process allowed us to look at our data objectively. When you grow up around a business, you can be too close to it. Having external leadership who asked the right questions before prescribing any answers was exactly what we needed.”
